WORKSHOPS OF THE FUTURE

Haizebegi & the Youth

When music becomes a space for reflection, connection, and engagement

The Ateliers du Futur is a program of activities led by Haizebegi with young people from the Basque Country. It invites students to reflect, through artistic practice and dialogue, on the social role of music and its power to transform our societies.

A Practical and Collaborative Experience

In 2025, the Ateliers du Futur brought together 85 seniors from René Cassin High School in Bayonne for a day-long workshop with Haizebegi and the Banglanatak Foundation (Kolkata).

What's on the agenda:

  • workshops on singing and instrumental music,
  • Discussions on the business model developed by Banglanatak,
  • reflection on how culture can become a catalyst for economic and social development for populations living in extreme poverty.

This day provided an opportunity to introduce students in the Economics and Social Sciences to major contemporary issues, particularly capabilities theory developed by the Indian economist Amartya Sen, and put into practice by Banglanatak in the field.

Speaking Out, Thinking About the World in a Different Way

Every year, senior classes from high schools in the Basque Country participate in the Ateliers du Futur.

Working with the Haizebegi teams, the students:

  • reflect on the social function of music,
  • explore the connections between art, science, and society,
  • and contribute to the creation of a festival segment, in which they become full participants.

This collaborative effort aims to make music:

  • a tool for social transformation,
    a lever for social justice,
  • and a way to defend cultural rights.

Memorable Encounters
The Ateliers du Futur provide opportunities for numerous encounters between students and guest artists at the festival, including:

  • at Largenté High School in Bayonne (with rapper Nayra),
  • at the Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin High School in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (with the Ukrainian singers from the Ivan Honchar Museum vocal ensemble in Kyiv),
at the René Cassin High School in Bayonne (with the Icelandic singers from the group Umbra),
  • at Albert Camus Middle School in Bayonne (with boxer Freddy Skouma, world champion),
  • at Marracq Middle School, with the music classes on a flexible schedule (with the musicians from theZohra Orchestra of Afghanistan).
