Haizebegi Around the World (HAW)
an international Art-Science-Society network based in the Basque Country
Based in the Basque Country, Haizebegi is developing an international network for cultural and scientific cooperation: Haizebegi Around the World (HAW). Through HAW, the association designs and supports projects abroad based on a single principle: fostering dialogue between art, research, and society, building on partnerships with universities, research institutions, and arts organizations and practitioners in the field.
Currently active with partners based primarily in Santiago, Chile, Belo Horizonte, Bogotá, New York, Bayonne and Beirut, the HAW network has already facilitated projects and collaborations in Iceland, Chile, and in Germany, as well as in other countries (Hungary, Canada, the Southern Basque Country, etc.). Each project is designed to serve as a catalyst for passing onand research, and creation and networking between regions.
Iceland: Baskasetur, the Basque Cultural Center of the Westfjords
Recipient of the Creative Europe (2023–2025), Haizebegi is leading the Baskasetur, which has led to the creation of a Basque Cultural Center in Djúpavík, in the Westfjords in Iceland. Opened on September 20, 2025, this unique venue is part of an ambitious initiative: documenting and sharing the history of the Basques in the North Atlantic, while developing a vibrant space for culture, research, and exchange.
Baskasetur places particular emphasis on:
- Thehistory of Basque sailors and Icelandic fishermen (navigation, fishing techniques, maritime economy),
- the historical throughout history, including the Basque-Icelandic , which fascinates researchers,
- and programs that combine research, creation, and transmission, through an open and contemporary approach.
The project is being carried out in collaboration with partners such as Albaola (Pasaia), theIcelandic Association of Friends of the Basques, and theUniversity of Iceland, at the intersection of history, anthropology, maritime heritage, and artistic creation.
Chile: Building Cultural and Scientific Bridges with Patagonia
In Chile, Haizebegi is part of an international cooperation initiative focused on a central goal: raising awareness of, sharing, and making accessible archives and knowledge that directly concern those most affected.
In this context, Haizebegi supported an initiative aimed at strengthen ties between Europe and Patagonia, particularly with regard to the history and archives related to the indigenous peoples Yagan, Selk’nam, and Haush, as well as issues of restitution, accessibility, and transmission.
One of the key objectives of this project is to facilitate access to European archival collections (which are often difficult for the descendants of survivors to access, particularly due to language and administrative barriers), by supporting digitizationand translation, and sharing and contextualization, while respecting the families and communities involved.
This momentum took on a very tangible form during an invitation and carte blanche that allowed representatives from the affected communities to come to France and participate in a jointly developed program: meetings, academic exchanges, workshops, exhibitions, and public events.
The goal at the heart of the Haizebegi approach is to create the conditions for work with and not on— by bringing together research, creation, knowledge transfer, and public debate—and by giving a central place to the voices, stories, and perspectives of those directly affected.
Germany: An International Musical Production Presented in Berlin
In Germany, Haizebegi also supports creative and outreach projects with an international scope. The concert “Azmeh & Krakauer: Traditions Without Borders” is part of a Franco-German academic event focusing on artistic practices during wartime, organized in collaboration with academic and cultural partners in Berlin.
Presented within the framework of cooperation among institutions (universities, centers of learning and culture), this project exemplifies the Haizebegi approach: supporting creative works in which music becomes a space for dialogue, listening, and exchange among traditions, repertoires, and histories.
