News Brief — Zaporeak: Nurturing Dignity

Europe’s doors remain closed to the thousands of people who are risking their lives to flee war and persecution. On Lesbos, in the largest refugee camp on the European mainland, 19,000 people are living together in a facility designed to accommodate only 2,500. In inhumane and unsanitary conditions, migrants often wait several years for a response to their asylum applications. On the island and from the mainland, volunteers from the Basque organization Zaporeak are working to improve their living conditions. Thanks to their determination, more than 2,000 meals are served every day. The organization also aims to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis and highlight initiatives of civic solidarity.
